Biotech pioneer Gillis ventures into a new field with Arch Venture Partners in Seattle

After nearly 25 years leading biotechnology companies, Steven Gillis — who co-founded Immunex in 1981 and Corixa in 1994 — said he is ready to "recharge" his batteries at one of Seattle’s largest venture capital firms.

Gillis started work this week at Arch Venture Partners http://www.archventure.com/ — a 19-year-old venture capital firm that he said is one of the few where "science still counts."

"I still think that breakthrough products are going to come from breakthrough science," said Gillis, who left Corixa last month after it was sold to GlaxoSmithKline for $300 million. "Arch seems to share that philosophy."

After leaving Corixa, the 52-year-old said he was presented with executive opportunities at both emerging biotechnology companies and pharmaceutical giants. But Gillis — who was recruited to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in 1979 — said he wanted to stay in Seattle.
