$400,000 grant expected to enhance work of physicist, BSU’s stature

Grad students, semiconductor industry also could benefit

A Boise State University physicist has added a prestigious national award worth $400,000 to his existing base of $1.7 million in sponsored research, making him one of the university’s top grant winners.

The National Science Foundation awarded Alex Punnoose a grant from a program specifically targeting "early career" achievers who are cited for effectively integrating education and research.

The quest for grant dollars and sponsored research opportunities makes the physics professor’s achievement significant both to him personally and to BSU overall, officials there said.

"Professor Punnoose’s stature in the academic community allows us to develop a reputation, and we’ll acquire more money in the long run. Universities such as ours are gauged by the research funding we bring in," said BSU President Bob Kustra. He added that recognition for Punnoose’s work helped the university further its goal of "becoming a metropolitan research university of distinction."
