Montana Sen. Baucus goes after $5 million for Milltown Dam economic redevelopment

Montana Sen. Max Baucus announced Tuesday that he’s set to secure $5 million in congressional funding to help redevelop the Milltown Dam area east of Missoula.

Baucus said the money would help the Milltown Superfund Redevelopment Working Group with plans to build new trails, river access points, footbridges and parks.

The money would be included in a federal highway construction bill now advancing in Congress.

"We’ve got it in there," Baucus said Tuesday afternoon. "And since I’m writing the bill, the Milltown dollars will stay in there. Redeveloping the Milltown area is a top priority because we can turn a sow’s ear into a silk purse, create jobs and develop a real asset for the area."

Milltown Reservoir is a federal Superfund cleanup site, with work expected to begin later this year. The cleanup includes removal of Milltown Dam
