High Country’s $25M is attracting interest in Colorado – State-founded venture firm sifts startup candidates

The state’s new program providing seed money to Colorado startup companies is already finding itself popular less than a month after its official creation.

Money will do that.

High Country Venture LLC, located in the small west Pearl Street offices of the Tango venture capital firm in Boulder, received more than 50 business plans in the past four weeks from entrepreneurs seeking money from a $25 million pool set up by the state.

In the next month or two, High Country should select the first companies in which to invest, said Mark Lupa, a High Country partner.

"We’re looking at a bunch of really interesting business plans, a couple of them in rural areas," Lupa said. "We’re very happy with the quality of businesses we’re seeing at this point."
