Card craze – Montana artists turn out greeting cards, from Duckboy to ducks

Postcards and greeting cards have been central to Rockin Rudy’s since day one, owner Bruce Micklus said.

When the store opened on Higgins Avenue just south of the Clark Fork River, Micklus put out a sandwich board that read, "Rude and Disgusting Cards."

"I’ve always been a proponent of rude and disgusting cards," Micklus said with a laugh.

From the start, it seemed like a winning proposition. People would open the door and say, "Where are they!" Micklus said.

But it was another line of cards that has exploded into a cottage industry in western Montana, as well as a substantial revenue stream for the Missoula purveyor of music, gifts and curiosities.

"The cards that continue to sell are ones that show place," said Molly Huffman, who is the buyer for cards and stationary at Rockin Rudy’s.
