Redesigning High Schools for College Transition & Workforce Readiness

The Education Commission of the States (ESC) report, “State Strategies for Redesigning High Schools and Promoting High School to College Transitions,” discusses barriers to high school graduation and postsecondary education. The brief also profiles five state level programs designed to ensure college and workforce readiness.

The programs were profiled because of their expertise in:

1) promoting education innovations like school choice and small schools,

2) increasing accountability by developing more extensive data collection programs,

3) strengthening curriculum by expanding the availability of advanced placement courses

4) bridging the gap between high school and postsecondary education through dual enrollment and other accelerated learning programs and

5) building the capacity of high schools by providing educators with more professional development opportunities.

Education policies from Arkansas, Oklahoma, North Carolina and Virginia are all highlighted in the ECS report. To learn more visit: http://www.ecs.org/clearinghouse/57/74/5774.pdf.
