Leaders move closer on plan to attract growth across 7-county region – We cannot simply focus on the immediate problems, we need to do assess long-term challenges.

A comprehensive strategy for promoting business growth in the Milwaukee area through a Web site and branding campaign will be unveiled by fall, officials announced Wednesday.

Work on the new campaign for development across a seven-county region has been under way for a year, officials said, and has included visits to communities that are ahead of Milwaukee in the global marketplace.

"As you might expect, we’ve learned some hard lessons," Michael Grebe, a leader of The Greater Milwaukee Committee, told about 400 business and government representatives.

Speaking at the annual meeting of the Waukesha County Economic Development Corp., Grebe said the plan will be aimed at harnessing the strengths of the entire region to reinvigorate Milwaukee as the central hub.

"Now is the time for strong, cooperative, regional leadership on the issue," Grebe said. "This will take time. It will also take trust."

A few years ago, I was in the office of the national security adviser and asked about the large stack of files on his desk. He said, "Lee, those files all deserve immediate attention. They cannot wait." Then, I noticed another large stack behind him. "Those," he said, "are extremely urgent."

Allowing these problems to fester today only enlarges their consequences tomorrow.
