Hilex Poly Co. of Jerome, ID may have to import specialized talent.

Employers, development leaders say it might be necessary
Plastic bag manufacturer Hilex Poly Co. http://www.hilexpoly.com/index_content.htm , which started operations at its Jerome plant in January, employs about 40 people full time and could hire another 10 to 20 right now — if qualified applicants presented themselves.

"We expect our growth plan to accelerate over the next few months," plant manager Mike Schutz said, citing strong sales growth and a successful startup for the Jerome facility.

In all, Hilex Poly’s Jerome plant will be looking for about 40 more employees within the next three to six months, to double its work force.

"We’re trying to do it quick," Schutz said.

And that’s the trouble.

Hilex Poly seeks applicants with three to five years’ experience in operating, maintaining and adjusting high-speed manufacturing equipment. So far, the plant’s employees have come mostly from Magic Valley, with just a few out-of-area hires. But to fill so many specialized jobs so fast, Schutz expects the company will have to draw workers from a larger area.
