Wyoming Legislators call for new approach to economic development grants

Some lawmakers say the state should prioritize the economic development projects funded under the Business Ready Community Program rather than awarding the grants and loans on a first-come, first-served basis.

Currently the Wyoming Business Council http://wyomingbusiness.org decides whether projects meet the goals of the program as set out in state law. If they do, the council sends them to the State Loan and Investment Board with a recommendation for funding.

Members of the Joint Minerals, Business and Economic Development Interim Committee are wondering whether the Business Council should do more.

"I’m kind of stuck with the idea that it has always been my expectation that when grant requests come through, the council would do more than look at the statute and pass it on," said Rep. Tom Lockhart, R-Casper.
