Web site takes input on school funding in Montana

Members of the general public will get a chance to give the state their take on Montana’s school-funding problem.

R.C. Wood & Associates, the Florida-based firm hired to help Montana build a new public-school-funding formula, will soon be setting up a Web site where people can air their views on the problem.

The Montana Supreme Court last year declared the state’s school-funding formula unconstitutional and gave the Legislature until Oct. 1 to come up with a fix. R.C. Wood & Associates, with its team of six education experts, will analyze the problem, assess the state’s educational needs and deliver a final report to the Legislature

Its Web site, which does not yet have an address, could be launched as early as next week. The consultants are looking for input from anyone who wants to comment.

"Obviously, any time you ask people to comment and they have the opportunity to do that, it just makes for a better final product," said Chris Lohse, a legislative research analyst working closely on the school-funding problem. "Not all wisdom sits in Helena."
