Adding value to energy

Wyoming exports more energy in raw mineral form than any other state in the nation.

That provides a strong economy in today’s climate of high fuel prices but a poor foundation for a future of high energy demand and more stringent environmental controls, energy experts say.

They say the state needs to export higher volumes of refined products — especially those that purport to turn a $6 ton of coal into $120 worth of liquid fuels and other products derived from a ton of coal.

But in order for the state to land coal-to-liquid fuels and other advanced "refining" technologies, state officials will have to convince the U.S. Department of Energy to spend its "clean coal" and other research dollars with the University of Wyoming.
