On the trail of Montana’s dinosaurs

Even paleontologist Nate Murphy is a surprised at how his idea for a map of dinosaur attractions around the state caught on and became reality.

At a meeting of the Missouri River Country in Malta in the fall 2003, Murphy suggested creating a map of dinosaur displays in the state.

The idea had been kicked around before, but this time several people picked it up and ran with it.

Before long, four of Montana’s tourism regions and the state tourism department were behind it.

In May, a brochure resulting from the collaboration was introduced during the opening of the Fort Peck Interpretive Center and Museum. The brochure has a map with 13 museums, centers and parks with the state’s top dinosaur displays. In some cases, sites have operating field digs open to the public.

The state set certain criteria for a site to get on the map, said Victor Bjornberg, Montana’s tourism-development coordinator.
