Hi-Line rally this week to show support for Amtrak

Gov. Brian Schweitzer will lead a "Whistle Stop Tour" along the Hi-Line Wednesday and Thursday in a show of support for Amtrak’s Empire Builder passenger train.

The tour will include town hall meetings in Glasgow, Havreand Whitefishand a rally with the Amtrak crew and their families in Shelby. Stops also are scheduled in Maltaand East Glacier Park.

"I’ve put this together to bring attention to the importance of Amtrak on our economy, not just of the Hi-Line, but the economy of the entire state of Montana," Schweitzer said. "This service is important to the families of our state, and we’ve invited some of the decision-makers to come along and see first hand the support Amtrak has in the communities of Montana."

Among those participating in the tour are U.S. Rep. Denny Rehberg, R-Mont.; Ray Lang, director of state and local government affairs for Amtrak; David Laney, chairman of the Amtrak board of directors; George Chilson, president of the National Association of Railroad Passengers; and Joe McHugh, Amtrak vice president of government affairs.

The tour also will feature music and food, including a buffalo hotdog lunch in Glasgow and a 30-piece community brass band upon arrival in Whitefish.

WEDNESDAY

10:30 a.m. to noon — Town meeting at Glasgow Amtrak depot

Noon — Glasgow lunch

1:15 p.m. — Train stops in Malta

1-2:30 p.m. — Town meeting at Havre Eagles Hall

2:39 p.m. — Train arrives in Havre

4 p.m. — Public rally at Shelby Elks Lodge

4:55 p.m. — Train arrives in Shelby to meet Amtrak crew

6:35 p.m. — Train stops in East Glacier

8:55 p.m. — Train arrives in Whitefish

THURSDAY

10:30 a.m. to noon — Town meeting in Whitefish, Amtrak depot

12:15 to 1:15 p.m. — Amtrak barbecue in Whitefish featuring Made in Montana products
