Wayne Brunetti said Xcel Energy will become the nation’s No. 1 wind power provider by the end of 2006.

Denouncing criticisms that Xcel is dragging its feet on building new projects as "ludicrous," the Xcel Energy CEO said Tuesday the utility would have more than 1,400 megawatts of wind farms through next year – surpassing the current No. 1 wind power utility, Southern California Edison.

California Edison provides 1,025 megawatts of energy.

Colorado will have at least 351 megawatts at the end of 2006, based on the wind farms that are operating and ones that will come online this year.
