Struggling downtown centers to receive state help

All in all, Bozeman’s Main Street is doing pretty well.

The 140 businesses between Grand and Broadway avenues that call Main Street home have weathered their share of big-box stores and an expanding retail district on North 19th Avenue.

There have certainly been stores that have gone out of business, but usually they are quickly replaced.

That’s in stark contrast to places like Butte, where downtown storefronts stand empty. Or Helena, where downtown shoppers are so scarce that city leaders have debated tearing up the central walking mall and letting traffic back in.

Still, that’s not comparing apples to apples, Downtown Bozeman Association Executive Director Paul Reichert warned.

"I think Helena has a very nice downtown, but it is a very different circumstance in each place," he said.
