Food co-op proposed for Missoula North Side

A community development group on Missoula’s North Side wants to open a member-driven food co-op and is looking at several potential buildings along the railroad corridor.

A membership kickoff is planned in late April. Doors could open this fall.

The idea, according to organizers, is to develop a small neighborhood market and deli that would carry bulk and packaged items, locally grown produce and other products, all with low-income families in mind.
It would be open to anyone, but would be especially geared for North Siders who could walk or bike to the store.

"It would never be able to undercut the prices at Super Wal-Mart," said Bob Oaks, executive director of the North-Missoula Community Development Corp., based at 819 Stoddard St. "But people won’t have to drive there, and it’ll be right in their own neighborhood. It’s a whole different perspective."
