Butte scientists looking for cheaper way to process titanium

When the U.S. Army wants affordable titanium, it turns to Butte for help. A new Army project named the Titanium Extraction, Mining and Process Engineering Research initiative — TEMPER for short — is tapping local scientists to find titanium processing methods that make the notoriously strong, lightweight metal affordable for military and commercial use.

"If we could reduce the price of titanium manufacturing substantially, you would see it conceivably replace things in your life, like steel and aluminum," said Corby Anderson, director of Center for Advanced Mineral and Metallurgical Processing at Montana Tech http://www.mtech.edu/CAMP/ .
