UVSC gives Utah entrepreneurs a big boost

"It’s a way for students to get an education while simultaneously adding value to the state."

Most business school students enroll with the expectation that the fundamentals they learn will turn them into entrepreneurs, or at least help them get better jobs.

Yet the reality is that putting theory into practice is often much more difficult than they imagined.

The deans of Utah’s business schools recognize the problem, and know they play a role in demonstrating how ideas born at the state’s universities – with proper nurturing – can grow into viable companies.

In recent years, they have created programs such as the Utah Entrepreneur Challenge and the University Venture Fund with the goal of helping students practice what their professors preach.

Utah Valley State College has not ignored that trend.

James Fenton, dean of the Orem college’s business school, has created an Entrepreneurship Institute that essentially enables students to use UVSC as a business incubator of sorts.
