Michigan Website Connects Student Interns to Jobs

Governor Jennifer M. Granholm recently announced the launch of a new website to help students find internships in the State of Michigan. Powered by the Michigan Talent Bank, the Web site offers valuable tips for students, employers and educators. The site features:

*
A search engine that allows students to review more than 400 internship opportunities by employer/organization name or location.

*
An Internship Tool Kit with information on getting the important first job, resume and cover letter writing, and job interviewing.

*
Tips for employers on recruiting, choosing and supervising an intern.

The Michigan Web site is part of growing state efforts to emphasize internships as a means to combat “brain drain”. In Ohio, The Third Frontier Internship Program is a three-year, $15 million initiative that utilizes federal funds from the Governor’s Workforce Investment Act to create internships for Ohio students studying math, science and engineering.

North Dakota recently unveiled a statewide internship program, Operation: Intern, which provides an online database of internship opportunities and support services to businesses who offer internship positions. Students must ensure that their specific higher education institution will accept the internship as college credit and the Mentor Center provides businesses with expertise needed to establish internship programs.
