Regionalism important for economic growth

Former Congressman Steve Gunderson remembers vividly a meeting with some rural constituents who were angry about the notion of regional planning.

Regional planning was a hot-button issue in the 1970s in rural America. In La Crosse County, one prominent town leader took his government out of the local regional planning group because he equated planning with communism.

But none of that makes sense any more. Gunderson, a Republican who represented western Wisconsin in Congress from 1981 to 1996, told local business leaders Thursday that "you can’t do the future without a regional strategy."
