State-of-the-art facility helps Corvallis dairy crank out 3,000 gallons of milk a day

Jacquelynn Sept gave a comforting scratch to the Holstein’s udder and a solid pat on its thigh. A moment later, red numerals began to rise on a computer that gauges milk production.

This cow’s got milk.

Hundreds of them do in this state-of-the-art milking operation.
No stools for these milkmaids. Sept stands as she ushers the eager cows from a loading ramp onto a raised concrete carousel where the milking happens during one slow rotation.

Rosario Gonzales, on the other side of the carousel, detaches the milking equipment, applies lanolin and then helps the cows exit the milking station. Then they trot out into the barn.

This is Huls Dairy Inc., the oldest operating family-run dairy in Montana. Owner Daniel Huls may be the third generation, but he has built the business to last. Two years ago, he completed a $1.6 million upgrade and expansion.

The result is the milking carousel and all the attendant facilities.

The most prominent feature is the huge airy barn. It is 120 feet wide, 360 feet long and 62 feet high at the peak.

"That’s just a little over one acre of ground," Huls said.
