* For more than a century, copper was king in Butte and this city became one of the world’s most important sources for the strategic metal. In the process, the wealth generated by mining and refining earned Butte the name "The Richest Hill on Earth."

* Some mining remains (Montana Resources recently reopened their open pit operations employing about 350) but the economy is much diversified from the days of a one company town.

* Butte is a regional shopping center with a trade area that extends throughout Southwest Montana and includes about 350,000 potential customers.

* The historic Uptown district is the traditional central business district and entertainment zone that is still home to approximately 100 retail and service businesses including 30 restaurants and taverns. Many of the retail stores represent family-owned specialty stores that have been in operation for a century or more. Stores like Rudolph’s Furniture, Steele’s Warehouse, Whitehead’s Cutlery and Wein’s Men’s Store have been operated by the same families for generations. Job losses in recent years have led to a residual effect on retail in the Uptown area but investment by these and other core businesses provides a stability that is a buffer to economic downturns.

* Community Vision:

* Community efforts are focused on increasing the attractiveness of Butte as a destination for recreation and entertainment with new festivals and attractions such as a new car museum, Irish cultural center, a pavilion that highlights the spectacular visuals of the Berkeley Pit, and a new tram to convey visitors to the Our Lady of the Rockies statue on the summit of the Continental Divide.

* The community is also working to make Butte a more entertaining place for its residents, especially for its children by supporting the creative programs of the Mother Lode Theatre and the Orphan Girl Theatre, upgrading playground eqipment in schools and public parks, building a new skateboard park, a hand-carved carousel, and an extensive trail system for pedestrians and bicyclists.
