The National Trust for Historic Preservation names Helena one of America’s "Dozen Distinctive Destinations"

A national honor could steer historic-minded tourists to Helena. The National Trust for Historic Preservation named Helena one of America’s "Dozen Distinctive Destinations" Wednesday. More than just a plaque, the honor includes some national exposure, said Paul Putz, city-county historic preservation officer.

"For the citizen of Helena, it’s free publicity for their town…(to) a specific market that is interested in visiting historic places," he said. "Our name recognition as a historic place could use a lot of elevation. It really is a kind of wonderland."

A profile of Helena will appear in the spring edition of the trust’s 500,000-circulation magazine, Preservation. The Queen City also will appear along with the 11 other "distinctive destinations" on the trust’s Web site.
