Internet editor, Jonathan Weber of Missoula turns his focus on the West – launches New West Network

Jonathan Weber, who in California helped found The Industry Standard magazine in the 1990s, now lives in Missoula, Mont., where last week he launched the online magazine New West. He hopes to tap into the tech-literate “New Economy” workers of the Rocky Mountain region and bloggers, whose writings offer fresh perspectives. Communities in the West are changing, Weber said, and “the media choices haven’t kept pace.”

Missoula, Mont., seems like an unlikely place for Jonathan Weber’s next great media venture.

Just five years ago, Weber was in San Francisco riding the dot-com wave as editor in chief of The Industry Standard.

The magazine, which Weber helped found in the late 1990s, mushroomed into the flagship of the Internet economy. It raked in more than $100 million for advertising in 2000, and its weekly issues ran in the hundreds of pages. The magazine, along with offshoot businesses, swelled to 400 employees, burned through $30 million in venture capital and, in the process, won a Gerald Loeb award for business journalism.

He is hard at work on his latest magazine, New West, which launched Monday at http://www.newwest.net
