Exports from Idaho rise in 2004, driven by high-tech recovery

Exports of Idaho products rose a second-straight year in 2004, jumping 39 percent to $2.9 billion as the high-tech industry continued its recovery from a 2001 slump.

Foreign sales of computer-related products including memory chips from Micron Technology Inc., Idaho’s largest private-sector employer, and Pocatello-based AMI Semiconductor, rose 58 percent to $2.1 billion. That’s more than two-thirds of total exports, according to newly released figures from Idaho Commerce and Labor.

The United Kingdom replaced Canada as the state’s largest export market.

And for the first time, exports to China and Hong Kong combined surpassed those to Japan.
