Washington, Oregon partner on economic development

In the spirit of neighborly cooperation, the governors of Oregon and Washington have begun to develop plans for a partnership on economic development, with agriculture playing an important role.

In one of her first press releases since becoming governor, Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire said both governors will assign staff to begin developing a plan.

“I look forward to forming a real partnership with our friends in Oregon,” said Gregoire.

Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski and Gregoire have spoken several times this year about issues such the Columbia River, the ports, the Gorge Commission and the Northwest Power and Conservation Council.

Kulongoski said he shares Gregoire’s commitment to creating jobs and growing the states’ economies.

“We recognize that both states will benefit when we work together,” he said. “Our states and our economies are inextricably linked. As she (Gregoire) rightly noted, when Vancouver thrives, so does Portland – and when Oregon thrives so does Washington.”
