Canadian company wants to extend power line through Montana to Las Vegas

A Canadian energy company says it is interested in running a 2,200-mile power line from Canada to Las Vegas, via Montana, and recently discussed the possibility with Gov. Brian Schweitzer.

According to TransCanada’s preliminary map for the project, the line would be directly south of Fort McMurray, Alberta, and would go through Montana’s Shelby area to the community of Townsend. From there the line would extend to south-central Idaho and then Las Vegas.

The route includes Townsend partly because a large electrical substation is there, said TransCanada spokeswoman Hejdi Feick in Calgary, Alberta.
