Schweitzer likes funding request for McLaughlin Research Institute

Gov. Brian Schweitzer on Wednesday told McLaughlin Research Institute http://www.montana.edu/wwwmri/ officials he’ll do what he can to support $1.5 million in state funding that would help the Great Falls center expand and add scientists.

Schweitzer said he’d ask his budget director to look for an acceptable source of money.

The institute, which does research on Alzheimer’s disease, "mad-cow" disease and other health-related areas, is planning a $3 million expansion.

It wants to hire three more lead scientists and another 20 support staff, said George Carlson, director of the institute.
