Research crunch at UW – Competition grows, but federal money doesn’t

In a University of Washington laboratory gleaming with stainless steel, Kristen Helton carefully dips a pipette into neat rows of tiny vials. She’s testing spit — trying to figure out how to use saliva instead of blood for medical tests.

Helton, a graduate student, keeps a black notebook close at hand, jotting notes that could hold the key to a breakthrough.

The UW is a behemoth in the fields of science and medicine — No. 2 in the nation in research funding, at nearly $1 billion a year.

An economic powerhouse, the Seattle-based university holds more than 800 patents, with 1,023 more pending. Over the past 20 years, on-campus research has been credited with spawning 185 companies.

But the future is suddenly uncertain.
