Firms preen to draw venture capital – 15-minute shot to tout potential

It’s like "American Idol" for the up-and-coming of Colorado’s high-tech community.

The prize: $1 million to $10 million in investment backing.

Tim Miller, chief executive of Denver’s Rally Software Development, took the stage at Beaver Creek’s plush Ritz-Carlton and ran through a polished PowerPoint presentation.

He had just 15 minutes to tell his company’s story to a ballroom of venture capitalists who collectively control billions of dollars – and are not known for niceties.

Despite the rigors of presenting, more than half of the entrepreneurs who presented at this year’s Venture Capital in the Rockies conference will get money, if past numbers are an indicator.
