The economics of bread in Montana

The Belfry Country Store has been selling groceries in the small town near the Wyoming border for about 80 years now, and Bob and Marcia Cichosz want to keep their town’s lifeblood flowing.

Twelve years ago, the couple and their three children moved back to Belfry to live above the store and run their own business.

The 1905 stone structure is crammed with some 3,000 products designed to keep the town’s 200 residents coming back, as well as attract customers from neighboring towns.

"We try to keep them from going to Billings, so we have a little of everything – hardware, videos, beer and pop," Bob Cichosz said.

What the Belfry store won’t be carrying after Feb. 25, unless something changes, is fresh bread.
