Spokane aims to put itself on map

The Spokane Area Economic Development Council holds its 31st annual meeting today on the theme "Creating a Globally Competitive Region."

It’s a topic that has done considerable duty at conferences on the wet side of the mountains, where participants have wrangled over the impact on global competitiveness of traffic congestion and land prices and development regulation and health care and pension costs and K-12 and higher education.

Some of those same topics will likely be on the agenda in Spokane, but EDC officials say the Spokane area faces a major problem that isn’t on the list of the Puget Sound region: Getting people to notice that Spokane is even in the global competition.

"One of our unique challenges is just getting on the radar screen," says Randall Fewel, president and chief executive officer of Inland Northwest Bank and current chairman of the Spokane EDC.
