Nutritional Laboratories confirms 28 layoffs

The MDT Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) Program encourages and supports the participation of companies owned and controlled by socially and economically disadvantaged individuals in transportation contracts.

Twenty-eight full-time employees were laid off by Nutritional Laboratories International Inc. last month, company president Terry Benishek confirmed Thursday.

The company also let go 27 temporary employees, reducing its total work force by about one-third, from about 165 to 110 workers.

The layoffs – announced last month – were not caused by a fall-off in business, Benishek said.

Rather, "it’s almost an annual thing. Our business is seasonal," he said.

Improvements in efficiency also contributed to the layoffs, which went into effect Jan. 13. In 2004, the business invested about $1.5 million in new equipment to streamline production.
