NW Energy asks PSC to approve wind-power plan

NorthWestern Energy on Monday asked state regulators to approve a contract with the state’s first major wind-power project — and said it could help revive a mothballed power plant in Great Falls.

The utility, which serves 300,000 electric customers in central and western Montana, said it hopes the Public Service Commission can move quickly in approving the contract for up to 150 megawatts of wind power from a new project near Judith Gap.

The project needs to be built before the end of the year to take advantage of federal tax credits, and PSC approval may be needed by next month to begin construction on time, said John Hines, director of energy supply for NorthWestern.

"We think it’s one of the lowest-priced wind products put forth in Montana," he said.
