Desperate for downtowns – All along the Front Range, communities are drafting plans for a sense of identity.

In Englewood and Lakewood, they’re building downtowns in the freshly scraped footprints of shopping malls.

In Parker and Highlands Ranch, they want downtowns that evoke Old West origins.

In the ever-sprawling metropolis that is the Front Range, cities and towns want to create a sense of place. They want an attractive gathering spot that makes residents feel larger than themselves, like a community.

"You have to start somewhere, and I think it’s fabulous that communities are figuring out they can build a heart," said Boulder City Manager Frank Bruno.
