Report emphasizes Idaho’s focus on science, technology – University presidents, government, private firms working together

Imaging, power and energy, agricultural biosciences and nanoscience are four strengths the state should focus on to build its science and technology industry, according to a report released Monday by the Idaho Office of Science and Technology.

A spokeswoman for the state office said the report represents the first time that Idaho’s public universities, private sector technology leaders and government officials have agreed on a game plan for future tech development.

"The key is that everyone’s on the same page now. That hasn’t happened before," said Julie Howard, a member of the Office of Science and Technology staff.

The report came after months of industry input and serves as part of the state’s overall strategic plan for Idaho’s science and technology industry.

Karl Tueller, executive director of the Idaho Office of Science and Technology, presented the findings and the strategy to the Governor’s Science and Technology Advisory Council at its biannual meeting in Boise in January.

"Idaho’s science and technology sector is growing faster than the national average," said Tueller. "We rank first in the nation in patents per capita. Our funding for university-based research and development continues to grow. Now is the time to build on our strengths."
