Energy wars: Coal, wind or both?

Energy policy is on the front burner at the Montana Legislature this session, and right now it is pitting smaller, green power production such as wind power, against bigger, more traditional sources, such as coal-fired plants.

When state Rep. Alan Olson thinks energy, he thinks big — big coal-fired plants, big power lines, big out-of-state markets and potential big returns for the state and hundreds of Montanans who could find work in this industry.

"This is a bill that could help repopulate eastern Montana," he says of his proposal to create a state board to promote new power lines that could jump-start plant development.

Yet for others, energy policy at the Legislature this session means something much smaller in scale, such as wind power for Montana consumers.

These two forces are on a collision course in Helena, as energy once again will be a major issue before state lawmakers.
