Economist says growth should be ‘modest’ in Montana

Events that would be minor on the national or regional scene have king-sized impacts on the Montana economy, analyst Chuck Keegan told the 2005 Economic Outlook Seminar at the Holiday Inn Parkside on Friday.

Those events include the pending closure of Owens and Hurst Lumber Co. in Eureka, said Keegan, who has spent years studying the timber industry at the University of Montana’s Bureau of Business and Economic Research.

The closure of Owens and Hurst is "directly due to the sharp decline" of timber available from federal lands, Keegan said.
