SiliCorn Valley Rolls Out Welcome Mat For Entrepreneurs, VC Firms

The Fairfield Entrepreneurs Association and Fairfield Chamber of Commerce are sending out a nationwide invitation to entrepreneurs to start or relocate their businesses in Fairfield, Iowa.

Fairfield has been described as “SiliCorn Valley” and the “entrepreneurial capital of Iowa” and has a great track record of attracting venture capital and nurturing successful start-ups.

The invitation extends to venture capital firms that want to create an Iowa presence, be at the heart of the state’s entrepreneurial activity and qualify for investment from the Iowa Capital Investment Corporation, which is Iowa’s fund of funds.

“The ‘Fairfield Entrepreneur Relocation Program’ offers entrepreneurs special deals on rent and telecommunications including several months free. The Fairfield Entrepreneur’s Association provides great support services including seminars, conferences and mentoring services as well as access to venture capital,” said Fairfield Entrepreneur Association President Burt Chojnowski.

“More than $200 million of venture capital has been invested in Fairfield companies over the last 13 years,” Chojnowski said. “This represents 30 percent to 40 percent of new venture investment in Iowa over that period.”

Chojnowski helps keep track of Iowa’s venture capital activity and tax credits as a member of the Iowa Capital Investment Board.

“The impact on this community is remarkable," he said. "Per-capita income has tripled, there are now more restaurants per capita than San Francisco and our county is ranked third in the nation in philanthropy in terms of per-capita giving.”

“Fairfield offers one of the best start-up business climates in the country,” said Fairfield mayor Ed Malloy, who is president of a company that started in Fairfield and past president of the Fairfield Entrepreneurs Association. “Fairfield is in the top tier of any city nationwide in terms of quality of life, cultural amenities and low cost of doing business. Nearly 2,000 new jobs have been created by start-up companies and we hope to encourage that kind of growth over the next 10 years.”

On behalf of the city of Fairfield, Malloy recently received the inaugural Grassroots Entrepreneurship Award given by the National Council of Small Cities to the top entrepreneurial small city in the country.
