Vincent recalls last split Legislature

Twenty years ago the 100-member Montana House of Representatives was split 50-50 between the two parties, and a Democrat held the governor’s office.

History, it turns out, really does repeat itself.

When lawmakers convene today, the House will be just as split. But according to Gallatin County Commissioner John Vincent, who was speaker of the House in 1985, that doesn’t mean gridlock.

"We had strong differences of opinion … but we had a commitment to the institution, too, and that came first," he said.
