Schweitzer’s move surprises Board of Regents chairman

Not everyone connected to Montana’s university system was thrilled to learn that Gov.-elect Brian Schweitzer wants to pour $ 5 million into student scholarships.

John Mercer, chairman of the Montana Board of Regents, found Schweitzer’s announcement a bit odd.

Schweitzer proposes to bolster student assistance by taking away money Gov. Judy Martz budgeted for two major objectives her office and the Montana Commission of Higher Education hammered out in a series of statewide public forums called Shared Leadership Initiative for a Stronger Montana Economy.
