Schweitzer’s team wants more money to market state to world – state needs to do more marketing to recruit new businesses.

In addition to economic development bills before the Legislature, Gov.-elect Brian Schweitzer’s staff has some ideas for jump-starting the state’s economic engines.

Evan Barrett, Schweitzer’s choice for chief business officer, said the governor’s office will "aggressively" market Montana to the world.

Barrett will be heading the state Office of Economic Opportunity and says it needs more money to function properly.

Governor-elect puts ethanol on state’s economic front burner

HELENA — It’s nothing new to hear state lawmakers talking about economic development — but at the 2005 Legislature, the new wrinkle is that a Democratic governor, farmer and rancher will be leading the charge.

Gov.-elect Brian Schweitzer, who has promised to be a "deal-closer" when it comes to luring companies to Montana, hopes to boost agriculture and other industries that can revive Montana’s rural areas.

At the top of his list is ethanol development.
