Internships provide a clear picture for choice of career

Years before "The Apprentice" became a popular TV show, Don McNeill discovered the importance of internships.

He had six paid or unpaid college internships, including stints as a paid segment producer/cameraman for promotional events at Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Bucks and Milwaukee Brewers games for a Milwaukee TV station and as an unpaid feature-segment producer for Post Newsweek Cable’s north suburban Chicago operations.

"I learned more at the Post Newsweek internship than at any other internship," said the 36-year-old McNeill, now president/executive producer of Digital Kitchen, a Chicago firm that creates TV commercials and segments. "I’d have to find something to report, write my segment, shoot it and edit it. We even did some of our own commercials."
