Looking to the north: Montana Lawmakers consider Canadian export business

A search for new markets for locally produced goods has led the local economic development authority and a pair of Helena legislators to cast their eyes northward.

Gateway Economic Development Corp. proposes to develop of an export program for businesses in its central Montana coverage area, aimed at selling in Alberta and eastern British Columbia. Local businesses that believe that with a little work could become export-ready are encouraged to take part.

"There’s been a lot of talk, but not a lot of action," in the area of exporting, said Rep. Dave Gallik, D-Helena. "Why don’t we tap into the Canadian markets with products and services made in our area, and sell them up there?"
