Education’s Role in Promoting Economic Vitality in Rural Communities

The Southern Rural Development Center has issued a special report that looks at the relationship between rural schools and communities in America. The Role of Education: Promoting the Economic and Social Vitality of Rural America is a compilation of nine research articles in three key topic areas:

Education, Human Capital and the Local Economy;

2) Links Between Rural Schools and Communities; and

3) Creating Successful Rural Schools and Students.

One of the articles explores the importance of schools to rural community viability. The author points out that communities with schools have higher housing values, a higher percentage of college graduates, and proportionately more workers in professional occupations than communities without schools. He concludes that “money that might be saved through [school] consolidation could be forfeited in lost taxes, declining property values, and lost business.” Download the report at http://srdc.msstate.edu/publications/ruraleducation.pdf.
