Firms find higher purpose helps foster their success

Some business owners are showing that doing good by their employees and community often will translate into doing well financially

As a single mother of seven, Carolyn Gable remembers clearly how tough the holidays can be when you’re struggling to make ends meet.

But this year, thanks to the success of her small business, Gable has the luxury of being able to provide gifts to more than 200 children from single-parent homes through the Expect a Miracle Foundation she started several years ago.

Gable, who is president and owner of Lake Zurich-based New Age Transportation, Distribution & Warehousing Inc., also goes the extra mile for her 48 employees, providing incentives for them to improve themselves and the community.

"People want to be appreciated, recognized and know that there’s gratitude," she said. "When they have that, the rest just falls into place."
