Grant for buffalo smokehouse to aid Montana tribe’s economic future –

Fort Belknap hanging hopes on proposed smokehouse

A new commercial smokehouse planned for the Fort Belknap Reservation could employ 20 tribal members and become a key piece in the reservation’s economic growth puzzle, an official here said.

Financing for the project comes from a $450,000 federal grant the Fort Belknap Indian Community Council won in September.

The smokehouse will use beef, pork and buffalo cut at the tribes’ Little Rockies Meatpacking Co. in Malta to make jerky and sausage. The former grocery store in Fort Belknap will be its home.
