Island mansion gets new name – Montana Island Lodge available for private events

The distinctive island mansion on Salmon Lake built by the late Bruce Vorhauer, inventor of the contraceptive sponge, has a new official name.

Although locals refer to the giant log house as "Sponge Island," and that won’t likely change, the home’s owner, the University of Montana Foundation, is changing its current name, Center at Salmon Lake, to Montana Island Lodge.

"Groups that come here for meetings and strategic planning sessions are intent on getting work done," she said. "They’re keenly aware that an island setting promotes that kind of focus and productivity."
