Lycos screensaver sends repeated requests to spammer sites for information about their products, driving up site maintenance costs – Successfully takes down two Chinese spamers

Lycos has produced a screensaver that sends repeated requests to spammer sites for information about their products, hoping to drive up monthly bandwidth bills of spammers by keeping their server running flat out. Spammers could end up paying to send out terabytes of data if enough people sign up and download the tool.

Although there is no motive to stop the spam websites from working by giving them too much data to deal with, the screensavers have been carefully written to ensure that the web was not overloaded with the amount of traffic generated from each user. More at bbc.co.uk, 11/29/04:

Lycos antispam screensaver takes down two Chinese sites

Lycos antispam screensaver has destroyed access to some of the web sites of its targeted alleged spammers. Two Chinese sites were successfully taken down by Lycos Europe; bokwhdok.com and printmediaprofits.biz. Users of Lycos Europe’s MakeLoveNotSpam.com screensavers launched a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack and have successfully crippled several spammer sites. Some of the targeted sites still remain accessible. More at news.com, 12/2/04:
