University of Montana Campus makes Forbes Magazine’s Best Places List- One of Top 10 "IQ Campuses"

Forbes magazine recently heralded The University of Montana as one of the Top 10 "IQ Campuses" in the nation.

The magazine praised UM and Missoula on quality-of-life characteristics and the mix of intellectuals and international students and immigrants. The list was adapted from a new book, "Life 2.0: How People Across America Are Transforming Their Lives by Finding the Where of Their Happiness" by Richard Karlgaard.

The article said, in part, "If your goal is to start a company or buy property that will rise in value, we recommend university towns, especially those with colleges rich in science and engineering departments."

Also making the Top 10 "IQ Campuses" list were Penn State, State University of New York-Albany, and the universities of Colorado, Iowa, Georgia, Kansas, Michigan, Wisconsin and Virginia.

The profile – accompanied a photo of the Oval and Main Hall – said: "Sawmill workers and University of Montana professors are next-door neighbors here, sharing the town’s affordable housing and good health care. Violent crime is low, and future job growth looks sunny. The cultural capital of Montana, Missoula has a long-standing reputation as the state’s most progressive city. Intellectuals, East Coast transplants, international students and Russian and Tibetan immigrants join the locals to make Missoula their home."

The article and profiles on each campus can be found online at http://www.forbes.com/bestplaces/2004/08/11/cz_rk_campus.html.

The Forbes list marks the third national ranking for the UM campus this month. The October 2004 issue of CosmoGIRL! included UM in its 50 best colleges for girls list.

Last week Sports Illustrated On Campus, a new magazine covering college sports and collegiate lifestyles, ranked the University No. 25 on its top 25 list of best college sports towns. UM is the only I-AA school on the list. To find out more, visit http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2004/sioncampus/09/15/best_rest0916/.
